Can we be sure of eternal life with Christ at the end of this earthly life? If we believe this to be so, where does our confidence comes from? It is said that Queen Victoria was deeply moved during a service and afterwards ask her Chaplain, “Can one be absolutely sure in this life of eternal safety,” But he did not have an answer for her. However an evangelist named John Townsend heard about the queen’s question and wrote to her and asked her to Read John 3:16 and Romans 10:9-10. Two weeks later John Townsend received a reply that stated, “I have carefully and prayerfully read the portions of scripture referred to. I believe in the finish work of Christ for me and trust that by God’s grace to meet you in that home of which he said, ’I go to prepare a place for you’.”
How prepared are we and what preparation are we making for that Place? In Ephesians 2:10 the apostle Paul says that we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works which God prepared in advance for us to do. And in Mark 4, in explaining the parable of the sower to his disciples Jesus liken people to seeds. Some seeds do not produce a good crop because they fell on rocky places or among thorns. The seeds that produce a good crop fell on good soil. As his followers we are the seeds that fell on good soil so we must grow and produce a crop of abundance.
In this broken and uncertain world in which we live, with the economic down turn, with greed and violence and a turning away from God, I ask that we do not let the cares of this world make us like the seeds that fell among the thorns, but the seeds that fell on good soil, so that when we enter the heavenly kingdom that Jesus Christ has gone to prepare for us, and as we appear before His Throne to give our account, we will hear him say, “well done good and faithful friend.”
