Bishop's Stortford Baptist Church has been a Fairtrade Church since 2005.
What does this mean?
The Fairtrade Mark
In 1994 the Fairtrade Foundation laid down some universally accepted criteria for Fairtrade products. These products can be recognised by the logo which appears at the top of the page.
Currently Fairtrade benefits 4.5 million producers and their families in poorer parts of the world. It guarantees a better deal for producers by paying a price that provides a basic living wage, ensures safe working conditions, fair treatment and provides a social premium to invest in community projects such as improving healthcare and education.
Our Commitment
As a Church we have committed ourselves under God to:
- Use Fairtrade tea and coffee for all meetings for which we have responsibility;
- Move forward on using other Fairtrade products such as biscuits, sugar and fruit;
- Promote Fairtrade at events during Fairtrade Fortnight – and through other activities whenever possible.
The Future
Jesus calls us to live in right relationships with God and our neighbour and through his Holy Spirit he enables us to do this. The commitment we have made to be a Fairtrade Church is a vital step in enabling us to be ‘a community of believers living according to the Bible’s teaching’ and being ‘fully devoted followers of Jesus’. However, like most commitments that Jesus calls us to, this is not the end of the journey but the beginning and as a Church we will seek over the coming months and years to develop ways in which we can live out that commitment.
